About Us

ASSE is the world's oldest and largest professional safety organization. ASSE fosters the development of technical, scientific, managerial and ethical knowledge and competency of safety, health and environmental professionals. We use these skills for the protection of people, property and the environment. A key mission of the Society is to advance the status and promote the advancement of the safety profession.

The Northwest Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) was founded in 1943 and has over 600 members. Our geographical boundaries are North and South Dakota, Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Our chapter activities are guided by the long range Strategic Plan for 2004-2007.

Fundamental Principals

As individual safety professionals, our fundamental principles are:

  1. Enhancing protection of people, property and the environment through knowledge and skill;
  2. Being honest, impartial and serving the public, employers and clients with fidelity;
  3. Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the safety profession;
  4. Avoiding circumstances where compromise of the professional conduct or conflict of interest may arise.

Chapter Charter

The Northwest Chapter is a local constituent of the national Society, and as such must meet certain minimum requirements of ASSE to maintain our Chapter Charter:

  1. Nominate and elect chapter officers and delegates annually.
  2. Maintain current Bylaws, conforming in principle to current ASSE model Bylaws.
  3. Assure all local chapter members are current members of ASSE.
  4. Maintain a minimum of 40 members.
  5. Submit annual report to ASSE by August 15 each year.
  6. Submit financial report to ASSE by May 31 each year.
  7. Sponsor at least four technical meetings each year.
  8. Cooperate with ASSE on national issues and educational programs.

Chapter Bylaws

Chapter Bylaws, approved by the national Society, form the basis of the operation of our chapter. In accordance with these bylaws, members govern the current policies, activities, goals and objectives of the Northwest Chapter.

Team Approach

ASSE Northwest Chapter is a member of the Team Approach, a cooperative effort of representatives of Minnesota occupational safety and health professional groups to work together to coordinate events, speakers and other health and safety resources within the community. Team Approach publishes a quarterly newsletter, and maintains an online Jobs Page listing current employment openings. ASSE sponsors the Team Approach web site, which serves as a portal to member organizations' web sites at http://www.teamapproach.org. An annual joint Team Approach dinner meeting is held in March each year. Information on the annual meeting is maintained on the web site.
